Meet Dixie Mae, sometimes referred to as "Tricksy Dixie - Escape artist extraordinaire!". She is lovable and loyal, but her young age mixed with extreme intelligence can get her into a little bit of trouble. A secure, fenced yard will be important for her future home, as this girl knows how to open gates with her nose!
This beauty came to the SPCA as a stray so her full history is unknown to us. We feel she will be best suited for a experienced home as she can be very excitable and energetic. Positive, rewarding training will highly benefit Dixie, as she gets very timid if she thinks you are upset with her. Her mannerisms indicate the training she has gotten in the past may have been consequence/punishment based. Dixie has great leash manners, however she is quite reactive to other dogs and should not be brought to dog parks or off leash dog areas. We recommend working with a trainer to overcome these issues and learn how to deal with Dixie's excitability. Potential adopters may also need to be prepared to work through her separation anxiety, because she bonds so strongly she becomes anxious when left alone and fears you may never return for her.
If you have any further questions or would like to come meet this amazing girl, please contact the Sunshine Coast BC SPCA. Dixie Mae will need time and love to become the dog she is meant to be, and it will be worth it for such a smart and sensitive companion.
